WOMEN FLEEING WAR
On February 24, 2022, Russian military vehicles advanced on Ukrainian territory from the North, the East, and the South. The advance was preceded by a long-range bombardment of Ukrainian territory. It was the start of the war between Russia and Ukraine, and Europe's biggest refugee crisis since World War II with an estimated 7,9 million fleeing Ukraine to neighboring countries and beyond, 90% of which are women and children.
These portraits depict a female experience of what it means to be caught up in the collective trauma of war. The women and the children in the photographs arrived in Northwest Jutland after being forced to flee from different areas of Ukraine. Although most women do not fight on the battlefield, they are still fighting the war protecting themselves and their families. Moreover, war adversely affects combatants and civilians both physically and emotionally. Several NGOs specifically work with the protection of women’s rights in connection with the war in Ukraine.
